Why is February considered to be unlucky?
Back in ancient Rome, the calendar had 10 months and only 304 days. Later, they added January and February to make things line up better with the solar year. Here’s where February got unlucky: The Romans believed odd numbers were lucky. February was the last month of the year back then and was tied to rituals for the dead and purification (spooky vibes). Because of that, it got stuck with 28 leftover days. Julius Caesar reformed the calendar into what we call the Julian calendar: He kept February short and added a leap day every 4 years. Later, the Gregorian calendar refined leap year rules, but February’s length stayed the same. Unlucky February? Not for you! Exceptions prove the rule, especially at RWTH. May February 2026 be a month full of luck and successful exams for all of you. Greetings from Dominika Lichteveld, Ilayda Özkan and Baran Peltek from the BeBuddy Team! |
