The “Maibaum” Tradition in Aachen
Every spring, Germany celebrates the tradition of the “Maibaum” (May tree) – a decorated birch tree or branch symbolising the arrival of May and the start of warmer days. In Aachen and surrounding regions, there is also a playful local custom: Maibäume are usually placed secretly during the night, often on balconies, in front of doors, or at windows at home of the admired person. It is a traditional declaration of affection - sometimes signed, sometimes anonymous, and often followed by a bit of teasing or curiosity about who put it there. To make sure rival admirers cannot steal them, the trees are often firmly secured before being set up. Every four years (in a leap year), it is traditionally “the women’s turn” to take part in the tradition, so two more years to wait? Or you just keep it the modern way which is: anyone and anytime! In many places today, it has become more playful and equal: friends do it for friends, couples for each other to spread love and affection! We would put up a tree for every single one of you! |
