A new semester is just around the corner, bringing new courses, new challenges, and new opportunities. After the summer break, September is the perfect time to get back into gear — not only academically, but also when it comes to your career.

Under our motto “FIT for the new semester!”, we encourage you to use this fresh start to take a closer look at your career plans: update your CV, polish your application documents, explore new opportunities, or reflect on your next professional goals.

Our regular program will be back in October, but you don’t have to wait until then to get started. We are already here for you in September — whether you need feedback on your application documents, have questions about career planning, or would like to arrange an individual consultation appointment.

Your semester, your opportunities

A new semester is a fresh start — and a great opportunity to get FIT for your career. Instead of trying to do everything at once, use September to set yourself up for a successful semester.

Here are a few things you could do:

Set your priorities: What do you want to achieve academically, personally, and professionally this semester?
Make career time part of your routine: Set aside some time each month to explore career opportunities or work on your professional goals.
Get involved: Joining a student initiative, volunteering, or taking an active role in student life can help you build new skills, gain valuable experience, and connect with others.
Discover what's out there: Check upcoming career fairs, workshops, company events, or networking opportunities.
Build your skills: Identify one skill that could support your future career and find a way to develop it this semester.

Getting FIT for your career is not about having everything figured out. It is about taking the time to explore, learn, get involved, and make intentional choices about your next steps.

Be part of the community!

A new semester is the perfect time to get involved, meet new people, and make a difference on campus. Here are three ways to become an active part of our community:
1. Join a student initiative: Turn your interests into action and connect with like-minded people. In September, we will introduce some student initiatives on our Instagram channel: rwth_careercenter

2. Be part of Welcome Week: Support international students as a volunteer during the International Office's Welcome Week: Join now!

3. Discover campus life: Take part in events! It's a great way to meet people, discover new perspectives, and make the most of your time at RWTH!

Your Monthly German Mini-Lesson

Each month we pick a common German word, explain it in English, and give you ready-to-use examples. Boost your vocabulary and sprinkle a little German into everyday life!

Peinlich

Pronunciation: [ˈpaɪ̯n.lɪç]

Definition: “Peinlich” means embarrassing, awkward, or uncomfortable. You can use it when something makes you feel embarrassed or when a situation feels awkward.

Sample dialogue

A: “Did you really send that message to the whole group?” – „Hast du die Nachricht wirklich an die ganze Gruppe geschickt?“

B: “Oh nein, wie peinlich!” – “Oh no, how embarrassing!”

Usage tips

Awkward moment:

„Das ist jetzt ein bisschen peinlich.“ → “This is a little awkward.”

Reacting to someone else:

„Wie peinlich!“ → “How embarrassing!”

Good to know: “Peinlich” is very common in everyday German. „Das ist mir peinlich“ means that you personally feel embarrassed — not necessarily that something is objectively embarrassing.
