SDG Campus

A Micro-Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability in Line With the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In order to give students from different disciplines access to high-quality courses in the field of sustainability, RWTH is introducing an interdisciplinary micro-bachelor’s degree in sustainability. The SDG Campus, a digital learning platform, is being created in a cross-university initiative with seven other universities of technology in Germany. The general goal of the SDG Campus is to promote technology-related sustainability skills among interested learners. Students will be able to explore the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and study technological solutions to achieve these goals.

Based on the common understanding that technological transformations can make a decisive contribution to sustainable development, high-quality, contemporary, cross-university learning opportunities are being developed at various levels. These include introductory courses on sustainability as well as basics, in-depth courses, and challenges for each SDG, which can be selected individually according to the modular principle.

The basic and in-depth courses are offered in self-study format with digital media and include knowledge tests. In challenges, students work together on problems in the area of their chosen SDG in order to develop the necessary design skills for a sustainable transformation. Participants must achieve at least 10 ECTS to receive a certificate – a so-called “micro-degree” – and 30 ECTS for the micro-bachelor’s degree. 26 students from RWTH Aachen University are currently taking part in the SDG Campus (as of November 2023).

In addition to RWTH, TU Hamburg, HafenCity University Hamburg, TU Dresden, Leibniz Universität Hannover, the University of Stuttgart, TU Munich, and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are involved in the creation of the SDG Campus and are coordinating the creation of courses as sponsors for one or more SDGs. RWTH is sponsoring SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.
