Survey on the Templergraben Living Lab

As an inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration supporting the sustainable transformation of cities and mobility systems, a social sciences survey on the Templergraben Living Lab was conducted, led by GDI. For the survey, conducted from mid-September to mid-November 2021, a joint questionnaire was developed in collaboration with the AStA Students’ Committee, the Uni.Urban.Mobil student initiative, the VCD, the ADFC, and the City of Aachen.

Among other things, the survey asked how the Living Lab was received by respondents, how the various projects and cultural events on Templergraben were rated, and how well informed the citizens felt about the Living Lab. The analysis of the results was made available to the City and the event organizers at the end of the survey period so that they were able to evaluate and adapt their concepts accordingly.

In addition, the survey explored the respondents’ mobility behavior, environmental awareness, and overall acceptance of the change in traffic routing. The subsequent analysis of this data provided the basis for a scientific article that is currently under review for publication in an international journal. The article examines the relationship between environmental awareness, acceptance of the changed traffic routing, and mobility behavior as a function of the costs of changing the traffic routing at Templergraben

The article combines research findings and methods from environmental sociology and mobility research and has a particular focus on equity and inclusion. The survey on the Templergraben Living Lab thus provided relevant inter- and transdisciplinary results that can be used in various academic disciplines and by civil society to contribute to a sustainable mobility transition.
